Upstream First: Meta's Linux Userspace, meet Linux Distributions

At Meta, even though our Linux fleet is primarily CentOS Stream (on servers) and Fedora (on desktops and laptops), we also need to support Debian and Ubuntu as well, for use cases ranging from Continuous Integration needs to ensuring our open source projects are accessible to a wider audience.

There are pros and cons to packaging for RPM-based and Debian-based distributions. This talk will discuss the rationale, our experiences working in two very different ecosystems, and lessons learned.

Desktop Linux at Facebook: A Brief History

Facebook as an organization has been using Chef to manage our CentOS servers for years, but recently we've started offering Fedora as a fully-supported desktop option for our employees.

This talk will cover the past, present, and future of Desktop Linux at Facebook - from the pre-Fedora days, to the first couple of years of supporting Fedora, and how we're applying the lessons learned from that experience to supporting a wider breadth of distributions.

We manage our systems using Chef, and many of our management cookbooks are open sourced; examples will be shown.
