Tom is an artist who has been using and making various open source tools to help produce his artwork for almost 20 years. For instance, he created desktop publishing software called Laidout to produce his comic books, and is now exploring the many aspects of video game production. He is based in Portland, Oregon, USA.

How to make video game vegetation sway

When plants move around in video games, it adds atmosphere, wether a gentle breeze or gale force winds. We will walk through some methods to create and animate grass and trees, using all open source software such as the Godot game engine, Blender, Gimp, and Krita. In this workshop, there will be a bit of texturing, a bit of simple mesh modeling, and a bit of mostly simple shader coding!

Laidout

Learn about desktop publishing software Laidout (laidout.org), which contains various unusual tools helpful for vector graphics and page imposition for books. Tools include an interactive folder for book signatures, a clone tile interface, and a vector based engraving style illustration tool. A new feature is a node based editor, which aims to bridge the gap between artist focused WYSIWYG editing and the arcane power of coding, and attempts to provide some interoperability with node setups from other applications.
